About the Project:
This project involves converting a Lily Pond design to a Floating Aquatic Wetland. The
challenge is to achieve the detention and treatment functions without compromising the
original aesthetic intent of the Lily Pond.
Variable water level can affect the aesthetic quality of the Wetland. To keep the water level constant, a hidden chamber is constructed along it to detain runoff during storm. The water in the Wetland is constantly circulated through a pump. Circulating the detained water through the wetland simulates the flow in a conventional constructed wetland. The proposed wetland system allows the flow rate, retention volume, wetland depths and its variability to be controlled independently of each other. This presents many opportunities for treatment optimisation studies.
During design stage, converting a conventional lily pond design to the proposed wetland system involves minimal changes. The pump system requirement is equivalent or lower than what is typically used for a lily pond. For this project, the power consumption will not be more than what was previously required for the conventional lily pond system.
Lily pond is now a staple feature in new condominium developments. Due to its high visibility and appeal, it has the potential to promote better awareness of the ABC Waters Programme if conversions in new projects are widespread and successful. The success will demonstrate that effective integration between popular aesthetics and treatment functions can be achieved with minimal compromise. Most importantly, a very common water feature that is highly decorative can be transformed into a functional treatment element.
